What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy refers to any clean energy that is derived from natural sources—or from processes that are continuously replenished. There are 7 main types of renewable energy: solar, wind energy, hydroelectric, ocean energy, geothermal energy, biomass and hydrogen energy. All of which rely on the planet’s constant, albeit-unreliable natural processes.
While generally considered a new technology, humans have been harnessing earth’s geological power for thousands of years. Indeed, renewable energy could be found in the sailing of ships, the use of windmills to grind grain, and sunlight to heat homes. Unfortunately, in the last few hundred years, we have tended towards cheaper, environmentally-damaging energy alternatives such as coal and fracked gas. But, it’s not too late to change our habits, slow down the effects of these planet-harming practices, and revert to renewable energy.
Why is renewable energy important?
The use of clean, renewable energy is perhaps the most significant measure we can take to minimize the impact on the environment. In an age where reducing carbon footprints has become an unavoidable responsibility for us all, as hard geological data become impossible to ignore, there’s never been a better time to reconsider our energy practices.
Electricity production is the number one source of greenhouse gases—considerably more than the carbon dioxide emissions caused from driving and flying...combined, while coal mining and gas extraction creates harmful smog and toxic buildups in our atmosphere and water supplies.
Completely changing our fossil-fuel infrastructure to renewable energy is no easy task, and will require strong, consistent support from government at both local and national level. Despite these challenges, Evergreen remains resolute in our commitment to provide sustainable energy products and services to households and businesses across the South West and beyond.
